When someone asks what the weather is like in the UAE, the answer is usually one word – hot. But there is a small team of meteorologists who are literally chasing clouds around the country.
Their goal; to bring temperatures down by making it rain. The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has pilots flying through clouds to inject them with salt to produce rain.
Cloud seeding traces its origins to the 1940s and although there have been advances in technology, the principle of forcing liquid particles in clouds to expand and increase the chance of rain remains the same.
During a tour of their facilities, experts told 7DAYS they even venture into Omani airspace, with permission, to fire flares into clouds before they reach the UAE and bring rain this way.
